The Best Things in Life are FREE!

For many years, I have thought that money can buy happiness. That we can find its true meaning from things that glitter – new clothes, new bags, new jewelries. And for many years, the proverb “All that glitters are not gold” has proven me wrong.

I remember when I was in my early twenties, I would always visit a mall to window shop when I was sad or depressed. I never went home empty handed. If it wasn’t the mall, I would visit a spa and have a relaxing back massage or a facial spa. I’d always find comfort in things like a new manicure, a new pair of shoes, unbranded bags or clothes, or even in a new headband! No matter how invaluable things were as long as I bought something for my self, I couldn’t care less. Then I’d feel happy. You know that wide smile you see on a child’s face when she finally got what she had been wanting for a long time? I’ve mastered that smile. My happiness, though, wouldn’t always last too long. At the end of the day, I was as empty as my pocket.

When our family migrated here in Singapore, I learned to value the things that cannot be seen or touched: a warm embrace, a short text message from our relatives in the Philippines saying “how are you?”, simple gatherings with friends. I only have few friends here whom I see most of the time. Some are so busy living their fast paced life catching up with their tight schedules. Some are not always around but you will feel their presence at times when you need them most. I don’t need to buy their time. They’re FREE.

I am learning to love the smell of the rain because the rain here is not as natural as it may seem. I am learning to love the company of silence and the chirping of the crows in the background. They give me a feeling of serenity. Our home is my comfort zone and I always find solitude in it. I don’t need to spend money and travel away from the city. A blissful, solitary moment is always close at hand.

I’m currently unemployed but I work more than 12 hours a day, 7x a week, as a mother and a housewife. I go to bed so effin’ tired most of the time. But knowing that my family is comfortable because I make sure there’s a satisfying food on the table, or they lie on fresh linen sheets, I feel great. Taking these things into account, I couldn’t be happier.

A month ago I celebrated my birthday. The third time here since we moved in this country. It’s just a small gathering and only a few close friends were invited, including a blogger friend whom I’ve been dying to meet personally because I only get to chat with her online. Our house was jam-packed and was filled with laughter from people who have met each other only that day. One friend even commented, “grabe ang saya ang birthday party mo… as in! feeling namin, matagal na naming ka chicka yung mga visitors mo.. hehehe.. saya saya!!! =)”. Although there were people who didn’t show up, some foods have gone bad, and I was left with a broken couch and a center table, I couldn’t compare the happiness I felt that very day. It’s beyond words. Immeasurable, if I may say.

I know now what matters most. I know now that…

It’s often true, right. Just forget about the price tags. 🙂

  1. I agree! I’m glad you had the best time celebrating your Birthday with your family and friends. Bonding with your family and friends is always priceless! Their smiles and laughter can’t be bought. That’s why when i’m around a family gathering it’s as if i’m high and I somehow can’t get enough of it. Kung pede lang di na matapos. (^_^)

Btw, Belated Happy Birthday, ngayon lang kasi nakadalaw dito. Oh and love your doodle! ❤

Tama ka Ka Bute, hindi laging free ang time but we can always make time for people we love if we really care about them 🙂

  3. hi..read your post…

yah it’s true..happiness cannot be bought..it’s all for free..kasi pagnabibili ibig sabihin temporary happiness lang yun, eventually pagsasawaan mo din…

and about the part na you’re unemployed and just being a mother and a housewife…. naku ha big accomplishment yan!! mahirap kaya maging nanay at asawa kesa sa maging empleyado ka..di matatawaran ang kasiyahan pagmakita mong masaya ang pamilya mo dahil sa pag-aaruga at pagmamahal mo…

    sorry…post ko ba ‘to?! hahah

haha! I truly agree with you. being a mom is one of the noblest and toughest jobs on earth kaya nga I salute all the moms who do their responsibilities with flying colors sa kabila ng pressure sa paligid.

Yes, we cannot buy happiness. It doesn’t have a price tag 🙂

Salamat sa pagdaan mo Iya_khin. Di ka naman siguro “iyakin” anoh? :p

Hehehe 🙂

      Salamat sa pagbisita 🙂

Awwww… 🙂 Belated Happy Mom’s Day pala. I forgot to greet you. Sobrang busy and tired most of the time, tama nga sinabi mo, tight schedule and fast paced life. Pero I always see to it that I visit your (and other friends’) blog kahit phone lang gamit, just like now.. While Im doing my laundry. Hehe. Singapore teaches me a lot of things, and yeah, one of those is appreciation of little things. I miss my lifestyle back home. I miss my family and my friends. But im loving my life here coz I learn to stand on my own and find happiness in simple things, like spending the day at the park (which I didnt normally do back in PH). I am loving being simple now. My almost “celebrity” status is gone, my “walk-in closet” in my Manila house is being missed but I find it amusing that I get to survive here with just a few piecesof clothes, shoes and bags. And Im proud of myself for not complaining about absence of that “glittery” life I had prior to coming here in Singapore. Aren’t you proud of me? Hahaha.
MS/call me if you want to go out or if you’re around Bugis or Orchard. Im now living here in Balestier. 🙂

Naaliw ako sa comment mo sister! I’m so proud of you!!! Apir! :))

Minsan nga di ko ma-imagine how you’ve managed to get by eh sabi mo nga, your life in Singapore is not as glittery as your life in PH. I’m happy to hear that you’re loving your life here. And it’s kinda ironic that we’re living in a fast paced environment but life is much simpler here. Diba? 😉

Sige, pag sinipag ako lumabas, I’ll sms you.

  7. Tama po. The best things in life are free..

Just knowing that your family’s safe and happy, PRICELESS. 🙂

Live life and forget about the pricetags. Agree! 🙂

Very well said Leah. 🙂
